Lip Augmentation through Injections of Gel or of Own Fat

Plump lips have always been a symbol of eroticism and sexuality, for a woman with plump lips externalizes desire: as if she is pouting her lips for a kiss in an unwitting temptation and enchanting. The fair sex has at all times craved after an easy way of lip augmentation. Nowadays medical science has at last found a method which can at the same time be considered accessible, quick and relatively safe – it is referred to lip plumping with the aid of injections either of artificial gel or of own fat.

Gel injection into lips is a common procedure carried by a cosmetologist in his office, whereas fat injection, the so-called lip lipofilling, is rather a complex technique that should be performed by a plastic surgeon. The essence of lipofilling is the following: a patient is taken fat cells from a chosen body area, and then these sells are injected into lips with a syringe. This, as it would seem, natural way of filling lips with the own “material” has, unfortunately, essential faults that make this method alas still less popular.

Firstly, fat cells naturalize badly when local anesthesia is used, which forces surgeons to hold the procedure with the use of narcosis. But even in this case equal distribution of the fat inside the lips is very complicated to achieve. A part of the cells naturalize, the other do not. No one can foretell how many cells are going to survive, that is why doctors often inject more fat cells counting on a part of them to die. Because of the problematic cells naturalizing the future lips form is hard to predict, besides, lipofilling is always accompanied by a strong, long-lasting swell. After the injection a patient will be forced to observe unnaturally augmented lips and to forbearingly wait for the swell to fall away and the final result to be seen.

As for artificial gels, they never cause any similar reaction. The result of gel injection can be seen after 48 hours, and, moreover, it’s easier to shape the lips in a desired way because all molecules of one and the same gel, unlike those of “live” fat, each needing to naturalize, behave identically.

All artificial gels are divided into two groups: the so-called temporary preparations and permanent preparations. Temporary preparations are gels with duration of staying under the skin not more than a year, permanent – three to five years.

Preparations called temporary, or biodegradable, or absorbable (these are all synonyms) include hyaluronic acid, a material normally contained in our skin and responsible for its moisture, which helps the skin cells to synthesize collagen. That is why the immune system reacts positively on the gel injection into lips: reject phenomena, complications or bad swells never occur. Hyaluronic acid gels are considered healthy, they have minimum of contraindications, and are theoretically justified for anyone in any age.

However, the result of lip plumping with the use of such gel rests not longer that a year. As our skin has its own hyaluronic acid it also has an enzyme to destruct this acid. This enzyme is called hyaluronidase. After the gel injection hyaluronidase sets into action and in course of a definite time it destructs the molecules of hyaluronic acid.

The duration of stay of the gel inside the lips depends on a lot of factors: the blood supply of the lips, the age of the woman. A woman in postmenstrual period, in the period of menopause possesses highly active hyaluronidase, that is why the fillings do not rest long. Such a piquant factor as the number and the intensity of kisses can also play a great role. If a girl kisses very often and the lips are being permanently massaged the gel diffuses sooner. Fortunately, the gel diffusion is a slow reduction of lip size absolutely unnoticeable both for the woman herself and for people around. Unabsorbable or permanent preparations are gels containing either pure synthetic material or the one mixed with hyaluronic acid. These are polyaclrylamide gels or gels with specks of silicone, but anyway, they are absolutely artificial fillings that can be perceived ambiguously by our body.

Production firms often dodge through adding specks of hyaluronic acid into synthetic material, thus hoping to “trick” the immunity and avoid complications. That sometimes really works, but sometimes it doesn’t. Unfortunately, synthetic gel injection can become a delayed-action bomb. You can have such gel inside your lips uneventfully for 3-5 years, but there is always risk of complications as granulomas, scarring, the preparation’s migration to the lower jaw and so on. That is why many doctors now decline using biopolymer preparations preferring biodegradable (temporary). To biopolymer gels (those with artificial specks) refer Matridex, Matridur, Dermalife. Biodegradable (temporary) ones are such renowned brands as Juvederm, Restylane, Surgiderm and others. The brands differ only in the producing firms and slight variations in the content (e.g., molecular weight of hyaluronic acid).

The gel injection procedure itself is painless. They often use regional anesthesia – just as dentists do. After several pricks of medicine into gums lips grow numb and the woman feels nothing. The shape and the size of the lips after the procedure depend on the technique and the quantity of the injected gel. Many women deliberately choose unnaturally big lips and a cosmetologist has no choice but to carry out the requested procedure.

In conclusion it needs to be said that gels based on hyaluronic acid are also used to even out deep wrinkles. Gaining age the body looses capacity to produce its own hyaluronic acid, and, consequently, collagen synthesis in woman’s skin lessens and wrinkles emerge. Such preparations as Restylane let even wrinkles out up to their full disappearance. The effect of the procedure lasts for several months to a year until hyaluronidase destructs the acid’s molecules.
