Plastic Surgery addiction

'2008

Plastic surgery is the sphere where the following marketing principle works regularly: 80 by 20. This easy economic rule states that 80% of all customers only bring 20% of revenue, and 20% of customers bring another 80%. The essence of this is in the fact that patients who successfully underwent plastic surgery bring their friends, relatives, acquaintances to the surgeon, and what is more important, they come to the surgical table themselves, make injections and other procedures going on enlarging the surgeon’s revenue. Those are patrons, if you wish, for whom surgeries and injections become the way of life.

As surgeons witness, many patients today have 5-6 and even 10 plastic surgeries in their anamnesis. Most of these patients are regular women who do not look like Michael Jackson or some caricature victims of plastic surgery. Nevertheless, an uninitiated would be shocked by the number of surgical procedures undergone by them and would assume that plastic surgery is a dangerous drug causing addiction.

What in reality causes a woman make more and more plastic surgeries? Our correspondent put that question to an experienced patient who wished to be called Cristina.

- How many surgeries have you gone through?

- I have to count that, I had no idea what you will be asking me about. I didn’t make any knots. So… (she is counting) I made four rhinoplasties, several liposuctions and some stuff about my face, can I not tell you what exactly?

- So, how many is that altogether?

- So, I made 8 surgeries. Some of them I made several at a time, do there were not many anaesthesias in reality.

- Are you going to have any more done?

- Yes. I want to get rid of fat on the body sides and have something done under the eyes and something else with my lips.

- You are a very beautiful woman now, do you have any complexes?

- No, why. I know I am beautiful. Moreover, I have understood in the course of years that plastic surgery can only help a beautiful woman. Look at who has plastic surgery: Angelina Jolie has her nose narrowed, Katherine Zeta Jones has her eyes widened. But they were beauties before. I think that plastic surgery can only highlight the beauty. For instance, if the eyes are beautiful, and the nose is a bit too wide, a girl can look a lot different. And if a girl is not beautiful, not charming, then no matter what kind of a doll’s nose she gets, she will never become a beauty. I must tell you again, I was very attractive before the first surgery. I simply like to improve myself that way. I look at stars’ pictures, and I want to have as neatly a nose, cheekbones and so on. People do go to manicurist’s on the regular basis, though you can live without it.

- That’s some comparison! Manicure and surgery with anaesthesia, incisions, sutures, pain.

- That’s the point – nowadays they make surgeries nearly painlessly. You are put to sleep in the ward, so you are just asleep, and after the operation the pain is slight, and it passes by quickly. Look, my latest surgery was liposuction: you wake up after the anaesthesia with bandages, it is painful to touch or hit this spot. And then it’s all over, and you show off your beautiful body, and no need think about fitting clothes to hide your disadvantages, any blubber. By the way, comparing to the pain from epilator or when the hair is being torn out in the bikini-zone, or the stress when your teeth are being drilled – the surgery is nothing. Of course, there can be high temperature a couple of days. But you know it will pass by soon, and you are absolutely healthy, you are just lying at home and waiting with excitement to see the result of the operation. Once you cross this line where you realize that it’s all not so scary, you simply start doing what you used to dream of. I used to dream of a tiny nose, nice hips, and I made that all for myself.

- Do you agree when they say that plastic surgery is a dangerous drug causing addiction when women start looking for demerits in themselves, start to suffer from dysmorphophobia

- Plastic surgery causes addiction, but not because they start to suffer from dysmorphophbia. I don’t have any mental insanity, trust me. Women simply like to get surgeries, especially those who have nothing to do in their life.

- Like to get surgeries?

- Sure. Here she is, sitting at home, having no work… “You don’t have any goal in your life…”, - as it was written by a classic. And all of a sudden she get a plastic surgery – a chance to look in a different, magic way, to change something that was given to you by nature, make a plum of a nose into a neatly cut one, like the Hollywood stars have. And your life is filled with meaning: first you are awaiting the surgery, go through computer modeling of your appearance, then comes the exciting day of the operation, than there is a long time before all the swells and bruises dissipiate and you are able to see the result – your new face. That is an inexpressible feeling of miracle. And women of course want to repeat it over and over.

- But this expectation of miracle can end up deplorably – they can just disfigure the face.

- Absolutely. That is a kind of game. An interesting game of chance, miracle, but it is also a dangerous one. You can be unlucky with a doctor and lose the game, or you can win it. You can win a lot.
We are thanking Cristina for the interesting conversation.
