Back to work after rhinoplasty

'2008

When can I get back to work after nose job? - This is the most common question to ask before rhinoplasty. Plastic surgeons do not always tell all the truth about healing period after nose surgery. So the patient sometimes is not ready, doesn’t know what to expect.

The first week after surgery you will likely spend resting in bed or on the sofa with your head elevated at all times, and you will need to have a responsible adult with you at all times in the first 24 hours following surgery. This week you will look very bruised and swollen, particularly in the area around the eyes. You will look as someone who was beaten and this is not a good time to show up at work. Additionally, you may find your upper jaw or teeth to be somewhat sore, so a soft diet is appropriate for a few days.

Drains are usually removed within a day or two following surgery. Within a week, packing and splints (if any) will probably be removed, and swelling and bruising will begin to subside. At the end of the second week violet bruising under eyes will no longer be visible. If there are any yellow lines left you can hide them with concealer. This is when most people can get back to work, but if your nose is still very swollen and doesn’t look the way you expected, you may feel not comfortable to show up.
The thing is that your nose will settle into a final result at least for a year. That means after surgery your nose will be swollen as if after drinking heavily last night. Day by day the swelling will subside, nose tip will become thinner. The degree of swelling depends on surgery technique, on how thick is your skin and many other factors – patients who have a natural tendency to swell easily will experience longer healing period.

So, if you are not likely to swell, if your skin is not thick and the surgery is minimal (closed rhinoplasty without septoplasty) - two weeks is the minimum to stay in bed. If you swell easily, give yourself two months.
